A community-driven organization, the Art Theater Co-op is a vibrant & welcoming space where audiences new & old can enjoy a classic cinema experience. Our mission is to cultivate engaged audiences for art house, independent, and foreign films. As the only independent theater in our community, we are committed to providing a dynamic environment of alternative theatrical exhibition.
We regularly partner with local community groups, cultural institutions, and the University of Illinois & Parkland College communities to maintain program diversity through a broad range of cinema. A sample of these programs includes: the Essential Cinema series, which offers a global roster of must-see films from the history of cinema; Late Nights at the Art, which features new genre films and cult classics; the Brilliant Corners series, which screens experimental, documentary and other alternative film forms; and Women on Top, a monthly series dedicated to celebrating women directors. We host regular discussions, panels, and expert Q&As after screenings of films to celebrate the discussion of film.
In recognition of our exceptional programming and commitment to community partnerships, the Art Theater Co-op was named an official member of the Sundance Institute’s Art House Project, joining some of the most prestigious independent art-house theaters in the country at the leading edge of innovative programming and cultural contribution.
